Awakenings is one of the largest and most successful techno brands in the industry. Not only do they host some of the biggest names in techno but they boast one of the best productions as well. Awakenings is the Dutch powerhouse based in The Netherlands but this Labor Day weekend they hit New York City alongside Electric Zoo Festival at Randalls Island. We may have been critical of the lineup and some of the choices of DJs but when Awakenings comes to New York you take notice. We only hope that this collaboration will lead to a permanent home for Awakenings in New York City.
We’ve experienced Awakenings at its home in Amsterdam, the Gashouder, and it’s quite an experience. It will be interesting to see how Electric Zoo recreates the brand in the Big Apple. The theme for Electric Zoo this year is 6th Boro, which essentially is an ode to the city with each of the six stages representing a different neighborhood. Jeff Wright, creative director at Electric Zoo, dropped hints about what we can expect to see at the Awakenings stage. In an interview with Billboard, Wright said we could expect overpowering lasers and breathtaking colorful visuals with an overall dark environment. It’s definitely starting to sound like Awakenings but you’ll have to wait until September 1st to see how it all comes together.
Awakenings is hosting its own stage with its DJs playing across 3 days. That’s right. Electric Zoo is a 3-day festival, which means you can experience Awakenings all weekend long. The DJs already part of the announced lineup include: Sasha & John Digweed, Paul Kalkbrenner, Julia Govor, Claude Vonstroke, Danny Tenaglia, Victor Calderone, Gaiser, Boris, Dixon, Henrik Schwarz, and Yotto. That’s a heavy lineup where no doubt the music will be some of the best of the weekend. There are more special guests to be announced as well as those Electric Zoo after parties making Awakenings New York one of our top picks for Labor Day Weekend. Tickets are on sale now and with a festival price tag you’ll want to act fast as some passes are already sold out. Visit Electric Zoo online for more details and ticket information. We’ll have one more top pick as we head into the Labor Day weekend so be sure to check back here soon but until then enjoy a promo mix from headliner Victor Calderone below!
