Amsterdam Dance Event took over the North Holland capital in what was 5 days of nothing but pure electronic music. Every DJ, producer, and label you can think of will make an appearance or host their own event in what attracts literally hundreds of thousands of people to Amsterdam. It is a veritable mecca for music and the place to be every year around mid-October. From house to techno, every sub-genre of electronic music is represented at ADE with a lineup that rivals Winter Music Conference, Ibiza Music Summit, and pretty much any festival out there today. But ADE aside, anyone who loves electronic music knows that Amsterdam is one destination you can’t miss. We’re a bit partial to techno and there are few that do techno better than the Dutch.
Aside from being one of the best cities for electronic music (ahem, techno), Amsterdam is a thriving city with a nightlife that rivals the clubbing scene of New York and Berlin. If you’ve ever been to Amsterdam Dance Event then you know this is more than just a festival we’re talking about, but an entire cultural experience that’s all about the music. It’s not that the city shuts down when ADE comes to town, but rather it comes alive with “over 2,200 artists performing in 120 of Amsterdam’s finest music and nightlife spaces.” It is the largest club festival in the world with a staggering and record-breaking 395,000 visitors from around the world attending in 2017. ADE also holds a conference in conjunction with the festival that offers the ultimate business and inspiration platform in the field of electronic music. Whether you’re a DJ, musician, student, visual artist, or simply just a fan, ADE’s conference gives you the rare opportunity to hear and learn from some of the industry’s top talent. ADE’s full programming can be quite overwhelming so be sure to plan ahead as many events sell out way before the festival ever begins.
If you come to the city in search of techno, there are some pretty amazing options during Amsterdam Dance Event for even the heaviest of techno enthusiasts. Start with Awakenings. Simply put, there is no bigger techno brand than Awakenings. The magnitude of their events is insane and their production, unrivaled. This year, Awakenings presented 7 ADE specials featuring a stacked lineup that included only the techno elite. That’s 6 nights and 1 day event taking place at the massive Gashouder which can host up to 3500 people. All events but one sold out. And then there’s Dockyard Festival. ADE is the largest club festival in the world so why not add a few festivals into the lineup and make it even bigger. Dockyard Festival should definitely be on your list as there are several areas with non-stop DJs all day long. And we’re talking some techno heavy-hitters but all in one place. This year’s lineup included Ame, Ilario Alicante, Sven Vath, Eats Everything, Egbert, Technasia, Paco Osuna, Luca Agnelli, Cuartero, Vril, Ben Sims, Planetary Assault Systems, Truncate, and still so many more! Dockyard Festival takes place in what one could assume is an abandoned industrial site but quite frankly it’s the perfect setting for some techno.
Awakenings and Dockyard Festival are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Amsterdam Dance Event with so many more events to choose from, but if you come to ADE, don’t expect to do everything. It would simply be impossible, but that’s not necessarily a bad problem to have either. It just means you get to choose your own program. Some other events worth mentioning include: Verknipt ADE Special, DGTL, Lost & Found, RADION, Audio Obscura x Mosaic, Audio Obscura x Underworld, Life and Death by Day, HYTE ADE, Keinemusik ADE Special, komm schon Alter, Defected in The House, Dystopian ADE Special, Straf_Werk, Knee Deep In Sound, All Day I Dream of Winter Sun, Vatos Locos, Innervisions Amsterdam, Circoloco x Loveland, Toolroom Live, Into the Woods, Mobilee x ADE, and the list could go on and on. It’s a bit obnoxious to even list out the many different events taking place but one has to understand the magnitude of this event. It just doesn’t get any better than ADE.
Amsterdam Dance Event wrapped October 22nd so there’s plenty of time to start thinking about next year, and it’s never to early to put this event on your radar. ADE has been known to pop up around the globe with it’s Global Sessions, which most recently took place in Mumbai. ADE’s global sessions is a series of events and conference aimed at the efforts to connect the local music scene with the rest of the world. ADE also presented 3 showcases at SXSW in Austin, Texas in 2017. Visit www.amsterdam-dance-event.nl for more information and to stay up-to-date on festival updates, news, events, and 2018 dates.
